Uhhh Bootcamp? I mean, Yeahhhh Bootcamp!

I've always been curious about bootcamp. The thing is, all the bootcamps I know about are at crazy pre-work hours. Hours like 6:30am. 5:30am even! Who are those crazy people who choose to work out  (and wake up) at such ungodly hours? Ok, I know who they are. I have a few pre-work bootcamp friends, who have gotten totally fit doing it, and don't seem to mind waking up so early. I'm a girl who likes her sleep though, so I've never gotten into it.

The thing is, I'm not so good with the post-work workouts either. By the time I get home, I'm far too tired (lazy). I can rally for ballet most weeks, because I love me some ballet, but other than that, it's hard to get motivated. All I want to do is cook dinner and sit on the couch. Sometimes I even shower. I know; It's amazing the things I can get done between 7:30pm and bedtime (which, by the way, needs to be 11pm - no more staying up super late, Kim. You're too old for this.)!

Sarcasm aside, I need to infuse some working out into my life. And inspired by the fact that I can no longer button jeans that fit just fine pre-holidays, combined with the 93% off bootcamp Groupon deal, it looks like I am now a bootcamper. At least for the next two months.

Starting on Monday, January 14, I'll be going to "30-day Bootcamp" two days a week - it's on my way home from work, and it's in the evenings, and it's close to BART. No excuses, right? This, combined with Yoga on Tuesdays and Ballet on Wednesdays means I've got four days a week of exercise on the agenda. I need to buy resistance bands, and a jump rope, and one of those bags that holds a yoga mat and stuff. While I just might die, I also just might get into shape.

Do you bootcamp? Am I going to die? Are there things I should be tracking, for my own personal edification?

  1. Well, I won a Boot Camp experience a couple of years ago. Here is my advice: You won't die. Do not eat for 2 hours prior to boot camp. Make modifications where you need too (everyone is at different levels-don't get into the competitive thing), but push yourself as much as you can. Take one day at a time. My quote of the day is: Whether you think you can do something or you think you can't, you're right." -Henry Ford You might as well think you can! Blog the progress. Inquiring minds want to know!

  2. I've never done bootcamp, but I've stood outside bootcamp classes waiting for them to end. ;)
Based on my EXTENSIVE experience with bootcampI just suggest you really watch your technique, make sure your core is engaged, etc, because - through the window - I have seen some people do some things that are not good for their bodies in the name of doing more reps/sets/whatever or going "deeper". That's all I have to say about that.
I'd love to hear about your experience with it. :)

  3. Work it work it! Talk about starting off the year with some seriously ambitious goals!

I love the idea of the bootcamp, but getting up that early in the morning is just not happening. Period.

I admire your willingness to do this. I'm going to see if I can talk James into doing the kickboxing classes with me!

GOOD LUCK and keep us updated!

  4. Good luck on the bootcamp! Let me know how it goes. I've signed up for some in the past, but I stopped going after awhile. :p

  6. Thanks! I was super motivated about this on Saturday, when I had energy. Last night I was wiped out, and today I'm super tired, and now I'm getting on that "oh man, what did I just decide to do?" thing...but I signed up. I paid my fee. I better do this. Besides, it might be interesting to see what it's like to commit to an exercise regimen for two months straight.

  7. Thanks - I figure, I've paid for two months at a crazy cheap rate. I better not stop going while I can get it so cheap, cause I can't afford to go at full price!

  8. That's awesome. Good for you. I found that early and post-getting-home workouts are hard for me too. So I do post-work but before I get home (go for a run, go to gym, etc). I found, that if I haven't walked through my front door yet, I'm a little more motivated.

  9. Ditto. The key is doing it before I get home. I can only do the post-getting-home thing if I allow ONLY enough time to walk in the door, change, turn around and leave. It'll be interesting to see how this goes, changing at work and bringing my workout stuff with me in a backpack or something.

  10. So awesome, Kim! I'm excited to hear how things go. I also find it really hard to motivate on work days, but have finally found a routine, and if I stick to it exactly, it tends to work haha. I basically get home, change, grab my book, and go. I actually now find it to be a great way to de-stress from all the emotional drama of the day :)

  11. What do you do to work out that you can read while you do it? I do like the idea of using it to de-stress :)

  12. What I've found is that even if I'm tired, if I force myself to work out after work, I always feel better after and even during, finding energy I didn't know I had. Some days it is easier to force myself than others, though. Working out gives you energy, and will also help you sleep better, if you don't do it too close to bed time. I have never been a morning person, and have never been able to make myself get out of bed for a workout. Just ain't ever going to happen. Sleep is just too delicious, and I will stay in bed until the very last minute. I've been (mostly) successful working out in the evenings after work, and afternoons on the weekends.

  13. I too, will stay in bed until the last possible second. I'm hoping all goes well and I can force myself to be consistent!

  14. You go girl! I only went to one boot camp class; I felt amazing afterwards but couldn't get over my grumpiness at being up so early. :) I was planning on getting back into an exercise routine last week and totally failed.

  15. This is why I am going in the evening. There's no way I would regularly (or more than once) make it to an AM class! NO WAY! I am committed to my 60-day journey. I WILL DO IT.
